SL7 welcomed Woden for a rare home game – and ever rarer home game on Willows – in cold and damp conditions. This was the second meeting of the sides, with ANU taking the points in a scrappy 3-nil win earlier in the season.
Suffice to say it was not the ideal start for the Royal Blue and White. An early goal was conceded after a Woden midfielder shot from long‑range and the ball slipped through the fingers of our reaching No. 1. While we could blame the backline’s missed opportunities to hoist the ball to safety in the preceding sequence of play, or the slippery conditions, the goal was most likely the result of karmic rebalancing after a very fortuitous 1-nil result against ADFA a couple of weeks prior. Fortunately for all involved things improved considerably from then on.
Our dynamic striking duo Dan an Eoin took advantage of some excellent mid-field play, and a somewhat porous defence, slotting home five goals between them by half-time. The only blight on an otherwise dominant 40 minutes of football was a second goal conceded, which resulted from some substitution-led confusion. Woden did well to capitalise as an interchange and structure shift failed to resolve quickly enough, scoring on the counter as the backline was in the middle of re-shaping. None-the-less, spirits were high as the halftime whistle blew. We held a 5-2 lead and could boast some of our best passages of play all year.
