PL & PPL Match Reports

ANU PL v Canberra FC

Looking down the barrel of a 3rd loss for the season, an under strength PL side readied themselves for a hard match in perfect autumn weather at a well prepared ground. With the inclusion of 17 yr old Nathan Evans making his Gatorade Premier League debut, Hideaki Kijori also getting his first start up from State 1, and a return from injury for John Gibson, the team put on a wonderful display of disciplined, thoughtful football. Evans was effective both defensively and in attack and helped set up several of the 1st half chances. However, the good lead up play did not result in a goal and like CFC, ANU were scoreless at half-time. The best chance coming from mid-field dominance and a strike from Kijori which hit the post. Although the young side was encouraged by the way the game was developing, injuries and tiredness eventually claimed the squad who held on for 76 minutes before a barrage of goals. Three in 3 minutes and then a late scorcher saw the score line of 4-nil. Most would say it wasn’t a true reflection of the game, just that they got smashed in about 5 minutes. Like previous games against a very strong and mature Canberra FC, it was high quality and enjoyable to watch. All players deserve a mention for their commitment to the game.

ANU PPL v Canberra FC

Going for their 3rd straight win of the season, by contrast the PPL had the depth of players to release Evans and Falla to the PL side.
Having a good record against CFC, the team put together a solid 1st half performance to be 2- nil up at half time. Goals from Michael John and recent 2nd time dad, Ike Moneke came from outstanding lead up play. Possession was the key and always threatened with a goal scoring chance. As the game drew out, and concentration waned, CFC scored but a shaky ANU team managed to hold on for a 2-1 win.
